Personal Note From Neil & Lisa

Dear Friend,

The intent of this course is to provide an opportunity for you to join together with people in pain, yoga professionals and health care professionals. Health professionals learn to apply techniques that fit within a biopsychosocial framework, yoga therapists and teachers learn to apply pain science-inspired yoga to one-one interactions, and each have an opportunity to learn from the people we serve.

Pain is often medicalized and psychologized, leaving many health professionals wondering if pain care is outside their scope and many yoga teachers believing they need to become physiotherapists or counsellors to help individuals when pain persists.

Reconceptualizing pain takes time. Applying these new concepts to a therapeutic practice is highly beneficial, yet often difficult. Witnessing the experiences of people in pain helps, and you rarely have the chance to do so without needing to respond to the person’s questions, reflections and multifaceted, complex needs.

Current approaches to pain care can appear focused on changing cognitions or psycho-emotional factors. Other approaches continue to focus on ‘fixing’ the body. Yoga as therapy provides an even more integrated and expansive view of the human and of pain care than the biopsychosocial perspective. It provides options to use embodied experiences, changing interoception from top-down and bottom up approaches. Yoga provides the compassionate view that the person in pain is whole and not broken. Pain science offers the clinician an intellectual way to get embedded misconceptions about pain out of the way, while they provide expert-supported yoga practices and techniques.

There is no quick path to becoming Pain Care Aware in our therapeutic interactions. Completing this course and the Pain Care Aware Yoga Therapeutics Certificate prepares you to listen in new ways, to have greater conviction that change is possible, and to offer a pain science-inspired care plan to individuals living in pain. We hope this will not be where you finish your education about pain and yoga, and know it is a powerful way to start.

This course completes the Pain Care Aware Certification – individual applications. You will apply what you have been practising since completing the Foundations course, and learn more about the lived experience of pain.

The twenty hours CE can be used as continuing education for yoga teachers (YACEP) or yoga therapists (APD-IAYT).

Pain Care Aware Certification – individual applications course is meant for a 1:1 application of yoga in pain care and is more suited to private yoga sessions or a therapeutic application of pain science and yoga on a 1:1 basis. Whereas Pain Care Aware Certificate – group applications has a focus on yoga class cueing and changing our language in yoga and other mindful movement practices, to include people in pain and to inform yoga teachers on what to do when there is pain in yoga.

Completing both certificates is a great idea if you offer both group classes and 1:1 teachings. You would only pay for the Foundations Course once and complete the certificate courses individually. (A total of 80 hours CEU is available when completing both PCA certificates.)

Pain Care Aware Certification – individual applications is offered both virtually as well as in person when and where allowed. Check our calendar directory for course options and locations that work best for you.
